How to make a tech pack your manufacturer will love

A tech pack is the instruction manual for your garment. A good one gets you accurate quotes, faster samples and fewer surprises in bulk. Here's what to include.

What is a tech pack?

A tech pack is a document — usually a PDF of several pages — that describes every detail of a garment so a factory can make it without guessing.

The 8 sections every tech pack needs

Section What goes in it
1. Cover page Style name/number, season, brand, date, contact
2. Flat sketches Front and back technical drawings, close-ups of details
3. Measurement spec Points of measure for each size, with tolerances
4. Bill of materials Fabric, weight (GSM), composition, rib, thread, trims, hardware
5. Colorways Pantone or TCX references for each color
6. Artwork and placement Print/embroidery files, size and position from fixed points
7. Labels and packaging Neck label, care label, hang tag, folding, polybag
8. Construction notes Stitch types, seam finishes, washes, special instructions

Tips for each section

Flat sketches. Draw the garment flat, not on a model. Show stitching lines, pockets, panels and hardware.

Measurements. Use a garment you like as a starting point: measure chest (1 cm below armhole), body length (high point shoulder to hem), sleeve length, shoulder width, hem width and cuff opening. Include a tolerance, e.g. ±1 cm.

Fabric. Be specific: "400 GSM 100% cotton brushed fleece" beats "thick cotton." Read our hoodie GSM guide if you're unsure.

Artwork. Give placement from fixed points: "centred, 7 cm below collar seam." Send vector files where possible.

Labels. Include your country-of-origin and fiber content requirements for the markets you sell in.

Don't have a tech pack?

That's fine. Send us a reference garment, photos and notes, and our team will build the spec with you during sampling. Custom clothing manufacturing →

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a tech pack to manufacture clothing?

Not always — many manufacturers can work from a reference garment — but a tech pack makes quotes more accurate and reduces sample rounds.

What software do people use for tech packs?

Adobe Illustrator is common for flat sketches, with Excel or Google Sheets for measurement tables. Dedicated tech pack and PLM tools exist too.
